Description:
|
This is a multi-function print/scan/copy device that connects via USB. It can also print directly from & scan to a memory card.
The printer was setup on Slackware 10.1/Dropline Gnome system thru CUPS using the CX6400 gimp-print driver and ghostscript. The scanner was identified "vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x0813 [USB2.0 MFP(Hi-Speed)]) at libusb:001:002" using sane-find-scanner.

Printer:
Using Cups Admin http://localhost:631, I chose the Gimp-print driver for the CX6400. Prints great so far, but haven't gotten around to printing photos from gimp yet.
Scanner:
Followed the advice found search LQ and I was able to scan a test image using xsane as root. I have not been able to configure it to scan as a normal user yet, though I don't see myself sanning that much for it to be a big deal.
Non-Linux features:
Works like it should as a color copier. I have not played around with photo printing from my camera's memory card, but will do so soon.
I will mainly be using this as a printer and a copier more than use the scanner and photo from card functions, but when I do use them, I'll be glad I bought this model. I bought this model to replace an old HP 722C Inkjet that has always been a pain to configure.

Supported with gutenprint-5.0 beta 3 and later; alternatively, you can use the driver for the 6400, as mentioned. Color photos print exceptionally, black and whites are still in progress, because I took a break.
The only caveat is that the gutenprint driver has not been tuned for glossy paper, specifically the DuraBrite paper that gives the best results, as the printer uses DuraBrite inks. Not a big problem, but I did not realize the importance of using the proper paper, and needed to find the proper settings to get good results. Prints now rival (and sometimes exceed, IMO) the prints I get from the local drugstore or Wal-Mart.
The scanner works great, and will work as non-root if you set your permissions correctly; ie add a scanner group, add yourself to it, and make sure your usb hotplug scripts are correct.
The card reader works perfectly without any special configuration. Print from card also works fine, as do the other standalone functions (copy, etc.)
All in all, a good buy, and pretty good on ink consumption, I believe. Of course, I haven't had a photo printer before, so I don't have much to base that opinion on.
Epson has been running a fifty dollar mail-in rebate for a while, so my price was 150.

Try looking at the PIPS system (epkowa) which is available at http://www.avasys.jp/linux/index.html ... it looked a promising start when I used it with my cx6600, but sadly I don't think they have improved on it.
Strange that Epson should have linux drivers on the Japanese site but not on the European or US sites!?
