My system: AMD Sempron 2400, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD, Mandrake Linux 10.1, ATI Radeon 9250 128 MB (with 3D acceleration working).
I installed the card in a free PCI slot. Then I started installing TV software: XawTV, KdeTV, TVTime. When I looked KDE recognized the card's type and started using the bttv driver.
TVTime is the only of the three that works. It shows the video, and it doesn't crash. However, it is quite limited in functionality - I need to be able to capture.
The other two, when I try to use them, they cause the graphics system to shut down and the monitor to go into standby. Afterwards, I could only do a "dirty" shutdown. CTRL ALT BACKSPACE had no effect, since apparently X.org had crashed. CTRL ALT F# also had no effect (tried 1-6 or so).
Yesterday, I was seeing how Mandrake detects the card, and I looked at the configurations. After I closed the configuration, XawTV popped up strangely enough. It had some garbled color patterns in its window. I right clicked it and found a menu for selecting input. I selected composite 1, because I have a video camera hooked there. When I did that, Linux crashed without so much as a "panic" notice. It just immediately started to reboot.
What is going on? I would like to stay with Mandrake since it works well otherwise on this hardware configuration, but I am thinking about trying to reinstall it around my new hardware configuration. Anyone had any similiar exeriences?
