Description:

It works very well with Smartlink softmodem drivers (www.smlink.com) in ALSA mode and ALSA driver snd_intel8x0m.
Download Smartlink Linux drivers, compile them with ALSA support, modprobe snd_intel8x0m, start slmodemd as
slmodemd --country=YOURCOUNTRY --alsa hw:1
You won't hear anything when modem dials and connects, you may have to wait a bit more until it connects, but it does its job very well.

It was me dumb who added this product without looking at the fields description.
Anyway, you find this modem integrated in many Intel i845 motherboards, as well as in Dell Inspiron laptops.
The installation and the problems are already described above.

Works great with the slmodem (smart link) driver, but no sound, even with the intel8x0m module loaded (in fact, this module cause more trouble than good, don't use it).
Just some bugs, you have to give the "Carrier Check = No" arguement to some ppp clients or they fail to connect (I tried wvdial and kppp, I had to tweak kppp a bit, using "it will never happen" as CARRIER DETECTION word).
I give this one a 7 because it is working, as it is very rare from winmodem... I can handle some bugs in that case :D

I would say this was good, but SmartLink has been taken over by conexant, who links to linuxant for linux drivers, thus only being available for conexant chipsets. Plus, the drivers are not free...

Actually I'd rate this a 4. I didn't know how to use it right away so I'll explain it all.
First you'll need to download slmodem.gcc3.tar.gz from linmodems.org, not smartlink.
Next you have to uncompress the file to create a directory called slmodem.gcc3
Next you'll need to open a terminal and type su. Then you'll have to type in the password at the prompt.
Next you need to complete these steps from the readme.
cp slmodemd /usr/bin/
BUT for Debian related Linux distirbutions, instead do:
cp slmodemd /usr/sbin
The above completes slmodemd installation.
find /usr -name slmodemd
should ONLY report the newly copied slmodemd
Should another older slmodemd copy be found rename it slmodem.old
When you want to start up the modem, open a terminal and type su. Then, once you are root, type in
slmodemd --country=USA --alsa hw:1.
You should get the following message:
error: mixer setup: Off-hook switch not found for card hw:1
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Jan 19 2006 21:19:22
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/2' created.
modem `hw:1' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/2'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.
You can ignore this error.
It it important you keep this terminal open or the modem will not work.
Then set up KPPP ar whatever you use under modem
/dev/ttySL0
When you wish to disconnect, in KPPP, click disconnect and then quit. You should also go back to the terminal and press Ctrl+C to kill the modem.
This should clarify for people thet are having problems with the driver.
Remember, you'll always have to start up the slmodemd driver in order for the modem to work.
