Now that I've finally figured out how to make it operative (I'm a newbie), it scans very well, as well as it did under Windows. Although the Linux kernal recognized it, the frontend scanning program--Xsane--couldn't find this device. The reason for this is that, in my Ubuntu distro, scanner0 is listed in the /.dev/usb directory, instead of in the usual directory /dev/usb. The backend file for the "Sane" program is "snapscan.conf." One must edit this file to give the path to this scanner. I, not knowing that scanner0 was listed in /.dev (a hidden directory), inserted the file scanner0 with mknod into /dev. This didn't work. Now it works well but with one strange hitch. After booting up, xsane doesn't recognize the scanner, until I unplug and re-plug in the scanner. Then it works great. Go figure!
