Okay, I am going to give a straight forward explanation of how I got my iPod working with debian without giving any reasons why. The reason for this is that I encountered a lot of problems and read dozens of webpages,so it makes no sense to explain my problems but rather hot to get it working.
Requirements:
- iPod (4th Generation, 20 GB, MAC PC)
- GNU/Linux machine (yours)
- Windows machine (yours or someones else)
Steps:
- Install the cd coming with the iPod on windows
(XP).
- Plug in your iPod.
- The software will detect that the iPod is running
on hfsplus file system and will ask you to format
the iPod so that it will be usable in windows.
- Answer yes.
- Disconnect your iPod from the windows machine.
- Plug your iPod to your GNU/linux machine.
- Install "gtkpod".
- Edit the file /etc/fstab and add the following line
/dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod vfat sync,nodev,nosuid,users,rw,noauto,umask=000 0 0
- make a directory in /mnt for your ipod using
"mkdir /mnt/ipod".
- Open gtkpod. In edit->prefrences, change the
ipod mount point to "/mnt/ipod" and check the
"Handle mounting/unmouting of ipod drive" box.
save and exit gtkpod.
- Open gtkpod once again, it should attempt to
mount the iPod. Only then you will be able to
add files and delete files from your ipod (using
sync).
- While the iPod is mounted, its screen will be
displaying a "Do not disconnect" warning.
- When you close gtkpod the warning will still be
there although the iPod will be already
unmounted.
- Open a console and type "eject /dev/sda". If you
don't have eject then you will need to install it.
- The warning disappears from the iPod screen. It
is time to unplug your ipod.
