Works out of the box, although drivers are required. Just get the 2.28 version, always works for me.
Here is my module/modprob.conf:

alias char-major-81 ov511
options ov511 compress=1 ov518_color=1 backlight=1 lightfreq=50 autobright=1[/CODE]
note: for uk (lightfreq=60 by default), backlight is a MUST.
note2: add "/sbin/modprobe ovcamchip" to your local boot script.
