Description:

This printer is not yet supported on Linux (as of 8 Jan 2005) -- keep an eye on HP's web site for drivers from HP.
However, I found that it works fine through CUPS, with the HP DeskJet 5850 Foomatic/hpijs driver. With The GIMP, it works fine with the GIMP HP DeskJet 2500 Series driver.
This is a color ink-jet printer that is designed to print up to 4800 dpi under optimal conditions. However with the GIMP HP DeskJet 2500 Series driver, you can only get 600dpi. I've found the 600dpi printing to be acceptable for most applications; however, if you want very fine photographic prints, you'll probably want to choose a different printer.
The coolest thing about this printer is that, for a very reasonable cost, it has a built-in print-server which can do both ethernet and WiFi. The internet interface has a web server that can be accessed to do any necessary printer setup, so, as long as you have a dhcp server to give the printer an initial IP addres, you don't need any special software to configure it via Linux. The manuals that come with the printer, although designed for Windows and Mac users, contain all the information a Linux user needs.
It also has a USB interface for direct connections, but I have not tried that, so I don't know how well it is supported on Linux.

Excellent printer. It took a while for me to get the wi-fi to work. Under the conections tab when you add the printer, You must use jetDirect as the network printer and name the printer host.
I use 300 dpi draft black + color and get fast printing and approx 500 pages of print.
