This inexpensive laser printer/fax/scanner/copier combination comes with proprietary Linux drivers on CD. I made the mistake of trying to use the driver package downloadable from Samsung's web site. That did NOT work!
I spent a lot of time (over several months) trying to install the drivers from the web on various Linux distros (Fedora Core 3; SuSE 9.x; Mandrake 10.1), and it didn't work on any of them. I was just about to give up and call the thing a $%@#! boat anchor (for Linux, anyway) when I decided to try the installation CD...
...and once I used the installation CD with SuSE 9.1, it worked fine.
(I haven't tested the scanner in Linux yet.)
I also have an old HP DeskJet that I set up in CUPS before installing the Samsung drivers. Although you can't see the DeskJet in Samsung's "MFP configurator" (sort of a control panel for the fax/printer), it's accessible through CUPS.
If you don't mind using proprietary drivers, this thing works pretty well. Just remember to INSTALL THE DRIVERS FROM THE PROVIDED CD!
If all you're interested in is a low-cost laser printer, the Samsung ML-1710 can be purchased for less than $100, and has open-source CUPS drivers.
