Using a USB 2 pccard reader on a desktop machine, with USB 1.1 slots, the hard disk is recognised straight away on boot at /dev/sda1.
Also same is so on my laptop. I was unable to reliably get the card to be recognised all the time on my Omnibook XE3, hence why I tried a reader........
