Description:
|
The Averatec 3200 series is an awesome little laptop. It is seriously tiny weighing in at 4lbs, and very thin with a bare minimum number of ports and a 12" screen. But, in terms of the perfect marriage between mobility and power, it's just what the doctor ordered. Specs are: Athlon XP-M 2200+, 512MB ram, 60GB HD, CD burner, built-in 802.11g and ethernet (I think it's got a modem also), USB 2.0, and...um...a pc-card slot for who knows what since I've got wi-fi built-in.

Here is a quick list of what works and what doesn't:
* [WORKS] 3D display - S3 Unichrome integrated on the Via KM400 chipset
* [WORKS] Wi-Fi - 802.11g integrated wireless with Ralink rt2500 chipset
* [WORKS] touchpad - SynPS/2 Synaptics touchpad
* [WORKS] ethernet - Via Rhine 10/100
* [PARTIAL] ACPI power management
* [WORKS] PCMCIA cardbus
* [PARTIAL] USB 2.0 (This is probably a kernel issue)
* [UNTESTED] Dual-monitor display
* [WORKS] Sound - Via vt8233 AC'97 audio controller
Please note that the 3D/DRI, wi-fi, and full capabilities of the touchpad DO NOT work out of the box on ANY distro. There is kernel recompiling and driver compiling to do. And many of the drivers are under HEAVY development. This laptop is about 3 or 4 months away from being supported by mainstream distros. IMHO, that is.
Below are links to a few HOWTO's that should get you started. Also, check out the Unofficial Averatec forum. http://www.averatecforums.com/

Great lil' Linux box!
Wlan - Ralink: use RT2500 driver (built into SUSE 9.3)
HID - Synaptics Mousepad w/ enhanced functionality (fully functional in SUSE! you can even use the scroll functions to go 'back' or 'forward' in Firefox! Nifty. Scroll functionalty good, tap sensitivity a little high strung)
Vid - Dual monitor supported, functional. Not so robust as with windows though. Monitor related function keys (Fn+F3, and Fn+F5 through Fn+F7) all work as intended. Use Fn+F5 to select primary monitor or dual monitor. Not tried "extending" my desktop across monitors. Is this possible?
USB - functions well, nodifficulty w/ thumb drives or the like.
Otherwise same as above. SUSE 9.3 really compliments this laptop.
