Description:

I was able to install Gentoo on this laptop with zero problems. I was able to foresee the ati drivers being an issue and emerged them during initial install. The Intel Chipset is certainly supported and works just fine, I've tossed a Netgear WAG511 in the PCMCIA port, and it was detected and was very easy to setup as well (specific info posted in other HCL entry for WAG511), pcmcia-cs was installed and configured for the correct hardware in this laptop. The dimming/brighting Function key works great, however, I have yet to attempt to configure the 'hot' keys at the top. The DVD/CDRW combo drive works great, it was picked up as /dev/hdc, indicating it's secondary master (meaning I can upgrade if I ever desire to crack the case to do so ;) ); and works just fine buring CD's with cdrecord and ide-scsi passed during boot (currently /dev/scd0). In order to get the ATI drivers working correctly in x.org I did edit the videocard section by hand rather than use xorgconfig. Really this laptop worked great "out of the box" even though I was prepared for the worst.

Excellent compatibility. Worked just fine out of the box with a default Gentoo install (including pcmcia-cs). I wasn't able to check out the optional built in G card, as this wasn't in the model I purchased (used from a kid at the University). This laptop seems to have quite the hardware inside:
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz with HyperThreading technology
1GB RAM
80GB HD
DVD/CDRW
USB 2.0 all around
Firewire (IEEE1394)
S/PDIF port
S-Video Out
VGA Out
However, this box does only include a single PCMCIA port. This might be considered a point to look down upon if you have a need for more (though the machine does come with a lot of devices integrated...).
The touchpad can be fully customized within the xorg.conf file:
http://web.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/
I have found that with hotplug running, when I remove my PCMCIA Ethernet Card (Netgear WAG511) the system will occasionally lockup. I have to hold down the power button for 4 seconds to cycle power, and it starts up no problem. I've dropped this thing a lot too, and nothing has happened (yet :) ).
All in all, I am extremely pleased at the ease of getting this thing up and running in linux.
Cool
