DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL FEDORA ON THIS MACHINE IF YOU WANT A DISPLAY. I have had a total nightmare trying to find answers on how to get the video working. I have had some success with SUSE but even that had a stripe down the centre of the screen. The dsiplay is an ATI Rage Mobility 128

Hi,
the solotion with problem with XFree is easy: use only reaolution 1600x1200. This notebook works well with Debian Woody and Sarge. I use apcid for battery monitoring. Kernel from distribution.

I have got X to work with r128 driver in Gentoo. It was not easy, but it works great now that it's working at 1600x1200. If I lower the resolution (because the screen is only 15", that resolution makes tiny font), a bug comes back with distorted mirrored screen in X. The solution was to set a higher dpi setting in .Xdefaults and any app that ignores the dpi settings, you can change the default font size. I have no framebuffer. Even with aty128fb and vesafb blacklisted, I see no boot messages, so I installed slim (something similar to xdm), so currently I get a black screen until the graphical login manager starts. I would like to fix this, but is it much more useable than trying to login to the console with username/password without seeing what's on your screen and then doing a startx. Also, if you do manage to get the framebuffer to work, it will be a small retangle portion of the screen. There is supposed to be a fix for this. My friend did it on a dell latitude (different model), but he had an nvidia card, not the ati rage 128 mobility.
