Description: This is an internal/external DVD+RW burner, manufactured by philips, and used in a bunch of laptops, DELL ones in particular. It works ok under linux, but there have been some "issues". Early firmware versions (v0.99) caused some drives to fail to burn correctly. This was a problem with the laser and seems to have been fixed in later firmware updates (v1.03, 1.06). The DELL forums have a lot of detail about this in the archives (look for the now-defunct "linux-laptop (non dell installed)" forum).

Mine now is starting to get a little flaky. Not sure if it's the drive or the linux drivers, but I get some weird seek errors etc.

CD and DVD burning works fine under 2.4 and 2.6 using ProDVD and xcdroast - I've never had a bad burn with decent media.

I don't know if OEMs are still shipping this drive.

Bottom line: If you have one, it'll work fine. If you don't and are thinking of buying, I'd go with something a little more solid.
