System info: Kernel version 2.6.8, GCC version 3.3.3, Gentoo Linux 2004.2, CUPS version 1.1.20-r1, Samba version 3.0.4-r.
This printer is new and not listed on linuxprinting.org yet. Samsung has a good proprietary driver its use web site. The driver works perfectly with CUPS and Samba. Prints clear sharp images and fonts. Easy to load toner drums and paper. At only $120 this little laser has to be the best buy of all Linux printers.

I actually didn't use the SAMSUNG CD when I got the printer. I mearly used the ML-1710 driver that was already in the Mandrake database.
I was also able to get it working with SAMBA. So now my fiancee can print from her networked laptop running windows. She had to install a new printer and, instead of using the CD that came with the ML-1740, she used a driver for a postscript printer (Apple) and that works fine.

I am using CUPS, had to use ML-1710 driver, because when I tried to find the ML-1740 one in CUPSī database it wasn't there, even though there should be a driver for cups on the CD that goes with the printer, I could not make this driver works.

This replaced my old Canon bubble jet.
Installed out of the box, using the ML-1710 driver in Mandrake's printer configuration tool.
Test page was fine from the configuration tool, and also from OpenOffice.
I'm not giving this 10/10 as the native driver was not included on the CD, when all the Windows ones were.
Checking Samsung's web site for the driver, there's i386 and PPC options.
I've downloaded the i386 version, but I'm probably not going to install it - looking at the contents, there's references to an installer; I'd prefer to use Mandrake's tools to do it all.
Some reviews mention that it's noisy, but I don't find it that bad.

I too had no problems with the Samsung ML-1740 on Ubuntu. Plugged it in & it's recognized immediately as the Samsung ML-1740 printer. It automaticly recommended the ML1710 driver.

No problems setting this printer up on slackware once I realised that there is extensive documentation and also linux drivers on the installation CD that came with the printer.
I used the driver from the CD together with CUPS and it works fine.
Drivers are also now available for linux from the Samsung website for this product. (If the driver link breaks in the future, just use the search engine on the website to look for ML-1740.)
All-in-all: Inexpensive, reliable and linux-friendly. |
