Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.8 - r1.5.2.1
Distribution: Fedora core 2

A Linux driver can be downloaded from sane.org (canon_pp) but appears only to work properly when logged in as root user, I have tried one or two work arounds but nothing seems to work yet. This is apparently because the system doesn't like non root users "writing" to the parallel port.

there are two console - type things to do (as root) to install the scanner if you have sane and sane backends installed with your distribution:

1) find the /sane.d/ directory, either in /etc or /user/local/etc, edit dll.conf, un comment the line canon_pp (that is clear the preceding # sign).

2) navigate to the /dev directory, run

chmod 666 parport0

(this latter is if you have kernel 2.4 or above, otherwise you will have to log in graphically as root to use the scanner)

All the above is needed because somebody out there has decided that parallel port scanner users need mothering.
