Description: Intel Pentium III 450 MHz (Coppermine, 256KB cache)
256MB RAM
12GB Hard Drive (IBM-DARA-212000)
Toshiba DVD-ROM (TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-C2202)
Yamaha DS-XG sound (YMF744)
Neomagic video (NM2200)
Kawasaki LSI Ethernet (via USB port replicator)
Sony Corporation CXD3222 i.LINK Controller (rev 2)
Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 1) (1 Hub)
Rockwell International HCF 56k Data/Fax Modem

Notes:
*I can't verify that the modem works (or doesn't).

*My sound card appears to be dying. Weeks before install I lost sound in a powerfail incident. Shortly before install I was able to get sound when booting from Knoppix. During Slackware install the sound card was detected and worked when booted in Slack. After install I (dual) booted into W98 and sound worked there. A week, or so, afterwards I have no sound when in Slack (unknown if there is sound in W98).

*Power management issues. I believe this laptop supports ACPI but has a BIOS older than 99' (which is apparently the magic cutoff point). The issues I have are with the LCD during suspend and powerdown. When the machine goes into suspend the screen will blank, but the backlight will remain on. When doing a powerdown (shutdown) the machine will go through all the shutdown steps but will remain on at the end (screen displays shutdown messages).

*Batteries. I have two batteries, neither will take, or hold, a charge. This is an issue from well before install.

*Kawaskai Ethernet had tendency to "go out to lunch".

*LCD has common hw issue that can cause it to go crazy. From my googling this is usually caused by a corroded connector on the back of the display (at about the "I" in Vaio). The problem can be temporarily resolved by flexing the screen. This problem mostly surfaces when opening the screen (or changing screen angle). See http://www.de-srv.com/linux/sony-screen.txt for more info.

*Otherwise life is good with 2.4.26 in Slackware 10.0

Sound:
A trip to http://alsa-project.org/ and running 'alsaconf' cleared up the sound issue.

Shutdown/Powerdown:
(I'm using the slackware bare.acpi kernel)
The kernel (see dmesg) reports the BIOS as too old and directs you to do the following to enable it:

append an "acpi=force" kernel parameter at boot

The laptop will now properly powerdown during shutdown.
(Googling suggests an "apm=power-off" boot param, which has no effect on this machine/setup.)

I've just discovered an apparent solution to my LCD backlight issue. That issue being that the LCD backlight would not go off while the machine was running, aside from when the lid was closed (lid switch still worked). My default X server configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) seems to have been a little deficient.

Adding this line:

Option "DPMS" "on"

... to the "Monitor" section of the config, and restarting X, cleared up this issue for me.
