Description:
|
Although this soundcard is recognised and apparently works with Linux using Alsa I could not get it to work out of the box with either Mandrake 9.0 or Slackware 9.0.
Instead I had to do the following:
1. Get a vanilla kernel (in my case 2.4.21).
2. Get the relevant ACPI patch.
3. Apply the patch to the kernel.
4. Configure the kernel disabling all APM functions and enabling all ACPI functions.
5. Compile the kernel, and its modules and install everything as normal.
6. In modules.conf comment out any referneces to sound modules and merely add:
alias sound i810_audio
7. This will still result in an error when booting into KDE, to remove the error go into "Sound Server" in the configuration part of the main menu and change the option from ALSA to OSS Free.
The thread detailing all of this is here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=37468
If any one manages or has managed to get the 7012 working with ALSA can you let me know:-
amos AT amos-site DOT org DOT uk
Maybe kernel 2.6 will sort things out.
Cheers
Amos

Further to my original review.
Mandrake 9.2: automatically detected the card during install and everything was fine.
Slackware 9.1: The soundcard doesn't work if you opt to install bare.i as your kernel, if however you opt for bareacpi.i, then sound works!
Basically the secret seems to be to get ACPI support working for some reason.
Cheers
Amos

As long as you select the correct drivers for this during config, the soundcard works perfectly under the new kernel. :D

Not a single problem installing it with Slack, (ALSA) it was even detected next to my SB Audigy card. (it's simply 'card 1' for ALSA)
I haven't tried the bareacpi.i kernel, but it seems to work fine for me on bare.i.
Really like the fact that I got both of my soundcards detected properly, and the only reason I vote '9' is because the Audigy sounds better :)

I have gotten my souncard working on the distros I have listed above out-of-the-box with little or no configuration. Gives good, clear sound.

I use ALSA without problems since kernel 2.4.18bf24. the alsa-base package sets up everything correctly.
However I must :
1. boost up the MIC line by editing /etc/asound.state once configuration has been saved (alsactl store), look for "control.13" and edit:
name 'Mic Boost (+20dB)'
to:
name 'Mic Boost (+60dB)'
2. I don't have MIDI support at all with ALSA (never had it), and this bugs me, I don't know what to do to get it working...
3. I have to prevent KDE from using ARTS since this conflicts with the use of /dev/dsp by ALSA.
Anyway the sound is great, despite this card only supports 48 kHz rate, most of software get the max out of it, with high output level, better than in Win***.

I can get it to work with ALSA, however, the sound quality is so horrendous, it wasn't worth keeping ALSA on my computer. OSS, however, works fantastically.

Well I can say it works for videos and music, but for games, it's not good. Caused me hours of grief till I realized the reason all my games were freezing in linux were because of the sound card not being able to be mmaped properly.
The other thing is the microphone, it needs to be boosted if you ever want to record anything.
Don't expect to play any ID games with this sound card, pick up a cheap PCI soundcard(Got a Diamond Multimedia Sonic Impact S90 for free) and use that instead.

Getting the alsa tools(drivers+utils+library) from www.alsa-project.org works everything ok.
Kernel compiled with soundcore as builtin and the alsa stuff (pcm, seq, etc) as module. The sound card was compiled as builtin.

This card is functioning now but not without some configuration and tweaking. It autoconfigured using ALSA fine though I did have to adjust a few things in Gnome GStreamer (applications->desktop preferences->: sound). Now I am new to linux and this may not be revelant here but to get all my sound working from my DVD rewriter etc. I had to set Gstreamer to it's Default Sink of ALSA and I enabled pipelining and it tested fine. The default source input is Enlightenment Sound Daemon. Now using my Sony Viao desktop I have good quality sound from my DVD burner.

This soundcard now no longer works out of the box with Slackware 10.1.
I'm still trying to get it to work.

It works out of the box on Debian based distros and LiveCDs. I tried it on DSL (DamnSmall), Knoppix, and the new Debian Sarge. All work perfectly, with great sound quality.
It won't work at all in Slackware 10.1, no matter what I tried. Kernel recompile, use OSS, use ALSA, as a module, built-in, nothing worked. I just gave up on it and installed Debian.
MIDI is untested, so do some research if this is important to you.
If you're going to use one of the above distorbutions, it's okay to use your onboard card, but if your heart is set on Slack, you're better off just grabbing a cheap PCI soundcard from your local bargain bin.

I'm not 100% clear on how it ended up working but it works with ALSA. (This was taking place in the wee hours of the morning) I think I compiled the now antiquated SiS drivers with 2.4.33.3 sources and it ended up working after running all the utils that "whereis alsa" came up with...
Good luck :)
