Description: Tiscali and many french broadband providers (free.fr to name one) supply this modem for free as part of their package. I found it very difficult to get any useful info, mostly because almost all of it is in french. This modem is based on the eagle chipset, as are many others, so the information in this document may well apply to o
ther modems too.

IMPORTANT!!! Before you go any further, look at the label on the underside of your modem. If it says E2T anywhere then you have the eagle II chipset. If it doesn't then you probably have the eagle I or some other (newer?) chipset.
REMEMBER THIS! Especially if this does not work for you. If you are at all unsure which chipset you have, I strongly recommend you find out.

There are linux drivers available on Sagems website (http://www.sagem.com/web-modems/down...rt-fast-en.htm). These apparently have a memory leak. There are also drivers available from eagle. I have not tried the eagle drivers and I used a version of Sagems driver which had been modified by a group in france (I cannot find their site nor remember their name). I think their version is more stable and does not have the memory leak. To download various files related to this article go to http://members.tripod.com/~sparadox/adsl.html .

Sagems installation instructions are very good, if you have the first eagle chipset everything should work fine. If you have the eagle II, you need to replace the BNM
files in the source dir with eagle II versions. These are actually in their own tar file, so you have to untar it, replace the files and then tar it back up. You cou
ld modify the script to work with loose files, but it is MUCH easier to tar the files again. On the site above I have provided a modified version already packed up wi
th the E2T BNM files. All you have to do is follow Sagems instructions using my archive instead.

Once the driver has been installed and Sagems instructions say to plug in the modem for the first time, it should work- no configuration required. After a few seconds
the adsl light should flash and then stay on. This means that the modem has synchronised with the driver. If this does not happen after several seconds then you have
loaded the wrong firmware (read "driver" or "BNM files")- there is no point continuing until you get the modem to synchronise. It is suggested that if it does not wo
rk straight off you should do a complete restart with the modem UNPLUGGED. Once you have installed the driver there should be a file in /proc called ADI something or
ADSL something (I don't have the modem plugged into a linux box at the mo)- at the bottom of the file it will say what the modem is doing, which can be handy.

Once the modem has synchronised you can configure it for connecting you to the internet in the knowledge that you have passed the milestone that many people get stuck
at.

ADSL parameters for England (check with your ISP):
Use PPPoA
Encapsulation: VCmux
VPI: 0
VCI: 38 (WARNING: THIS MUST BE IN HEX- 38= 26 in hex)

Also note that for the account config it MUST be "username TAB * TAB password TAB * TAB ENTER ENTER" (just to be sure).

And thats it. Let me know if I've missed anything.

Kernel (uname -r): Not a clue, i only installed it 4 days ago, i'm new to linux
Distribution: Mandrake Linux 10.1 Downloaded version


I just installed mandrake 10.1 and the modem was plugged in at the time and it works just fine, i didnt have to install any drivers. I only set up the connection after it finished installing and then i was on the net.

I replied to this because this came up when i google searched.

I used this modem 1 year with the best french ISP : Free.
No problem.

Downloaded the driver from sagem's website...my modem has an "E3" tag on it tho the software seems to work ok but... well the driver seems to load up on boot, but when i type 'startadsl', which the documentation tells you to do, nothing happens..? so in another terminal window i have to type 'stopadsl', then 'startadsl' again (!?) and this usually gives me net access..like i said it works fine once going but seems strange to have to go thru all that?
