Description: There is support information for this laptop at:

http://h200003.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...&lang=en&cc=gb

I installed mandrake 10 on this and it took not more than 15mins in total. I have it dual boot with XP. Mandrake install use lilo to do this for me automatically.

Everything works apart from the built in LAN W200 Card which i gave up trying to get to work, there are people that have done this but I think it involves flash upgrading the card and then using ndiswrapper. I am happy with using ndiswrapper but i wasn't too keen to flash upgrade the W200 and hence lose my support on XP as I did something non-standard

To get my wireless network i bought a DLINK650+ card which seems to work fairly well, i have documented how i did this here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=197576

The other thing that I have not figured out yet is how to suspend/hibernate the laptop using the blue suspend button...i might try setting it so that it does a shutdown as accidentally pressing it and screwing the screen up is not great

Mostly everything else on the laptop hardware wise seems to work so I am happy

I installed Fedora Core 2 on this laptop and it works like a charm except ACPI. you MUST specify acpi=off at boot time or else the laptop fan will not work and the laptop will overheat and shutdown (if not get damaged).

The sound, video, dvd drive, network card all work right of the box. I even installed a netgear wg511 wireless card on it.

Dude, your 610c needs a BIOS upgrade to enable ACPI. Check /proc for the environmental settings...they are probably messed up. Go here: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/EvoNotebook/us/download/21058.html
to download the BIOS on DOS disks (referenced from here: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/EvoNotebook/us/locate/64_4215.html)

Then check your /proc...ACPI will work wonderfully, even throttling the fans properly and everything.

Name of the laptop : Compaq Evo N610c
Wireless Card : Wireless Lan W200 (use this to install)

I have upgraded the RAM to 1Gig. Imortant thing work fine in linux. Wireless network is a pain. Its called "Wireless Lan W200". Its usb and it is fixed on the back of the screen. I tried to use ndiswrapper but failed. But I managed to do it by following this guide. It uses orinoco driver.

If visible screen is small when Operating System is loading then you need to upgrade the bios. Get the bios from Compaq and follow instruction there. Since I dont have a floppy drive on the laptop I had to make bootable cd instead. I did it by using nero. Maybe bios upgrade is needed to get the wireless card to work.
