Older kernels do not work well with this device. The device has several flaws. Device is also "blacklisted"
DMA not supported on several controllers.
Do your research before you buy a Seagate.

I have one.

Nice except for the bug...

To clarify the above post, with a Sil controller there is a bug ( mod15write bug) that means for system stability it needs to be limited to writes of 8K sectors.

I had the harddrive lock up whilst writing video from firewire. This was stopped by adding this device to the 'blacklist' in the kernel source. The side effect is hdparm -t results dropped from ~53Mb/s to 13Mb/s. :(

But at least it doesn't freeze my system anymore.

Detected from install from Mandrake 10.0 onwards. Works great with Via controller (south bridge).

I have never experienced any of the bugs mentioned by above posters. However, I bought the drive in July, and it failed about 2 weeks ago (hardware failure). I am now waiting on my RMA shipment of a new drive. hdparm -tT results were very disappointing for the speed of SATA. My 80GB ATA/100 hard drive received nearly identical ratings (less than 2% difference). I cannot, however, be certain if this is a chipset or hard drive issue. For reference, my other drive-related hardware is as follows:
Motherboard: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (ICH5 Chipset)
CPU: Pentium 4 2.8 GHz Hyperthreading (Northwood)
RAM: 1 GB (2x512 MB) Corsair Dual Channel PC3200 DDR

Accordingly, I feel the only bottleneck is likely to be the SATA drive itself. While it is very compatible, as far as I have seen, I would strongly urge AGAINST buying one.
