Hewlett Packard Scanjet 3300c seems work work out of the box with mandrake 10 official, but not with more generic linuxes like slackware. there is a patch to the SANE backend to support this scanner, which is what I believe MDK did. I didn't have success with this method, as my SANE source was newer than the patch supported, and I didn't want to down-grade it.
so, it somewhat works, if you have the correct distribution, or time necessary to patch the sources because it is not yet integreated into the SANE backend source
