This modem has worked without any problems on Mandrake 9.0, SuSE 8.1, and Slackware 9.1. No drivers were needed. For some reason Fedora Core 1 did not see it though, unfortunatly I was not able to troubleshoot it very much since it was a temporary install. This may have been a configuration issue not necessarily a problem with the modem's compatibility.

My FC 1 did not recognize it either, but when kudzu asked if I wanted to keep the configuration, I did leave it configured from RH9. It still works like a charm.

I installed this modem after giving up on the Conexant card modem
that I have used with Win 98 and Win XP. SuSe found it right off and
the configuration went without any problem. I was online with it in
about 5 minutes.

Assuming this is the Best Data external serial-port modem: model #: 56SX-92; then this is one of the best modems I have ever owned. It worked out of the box absolutely perfectly. It recently died on me and I replaced it with a comparable modem [US Robotics Performance Pro internal PCI controller-based/hardware modem]. It has a 5-year warranty so I will return it to the manufacturer for a replacement. Great modem otherwise [The only other one comparable with it is the US Robotics Performance Pro internal PCI controller-based hardware modem. With the Performance Pro, you first have to remove the symbolic link to /dev/modem and then create one like this: ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem and it will work flawlessly. The system sees the Performance Pro modem as "/dev/ttyS4"]

Best Data external serial modem. select retail box option and deselect all other options. $18.68 includes cables, windoze driver disk and shipping. Great deal.

I sure wish the hell Id seen that I could have got it for less that 16 bucks
as aposed to the 35:)

Well yes it will dail out on my linux's BUT it didnt hold connection long
In fact on my fedora it would only seem to post a 9600 bps
so after a hour I gave up.. And put in on my Mandrake.. It only faird better , But still woiuld die after few min,
It works well on windows LOL..

Im useing a Old 3com rockwell modem it seems to work well with both destros.

So its eather the ISP that dont mesh well with the best date modem on a linux ..Or something else.. ,That im clueless to..

This modem works great on linux, good connecting time, great speed, easy to use.

In regard to dsholden's post: I would not shop at gearxs.com. I did a google search for "gearxs.com customer reviews" and found a site that had over 30 reviews, 26 good and 4 bad. All 26 negative posts were posted a few seconds apart from each other, a few were repeats (word for word), and they all had the same spelling mistakes. It makes you wonder if site or the reviews are fake.

I bought mine at pcimicro.com for $17 (free shipping) and It arrived 3 days later.

I bought this modem because it supported Linux on the box! It worked first try. Great external serial modem for a cheap price.
