compiled the kernel with sound and ALSA; it found the old alsactl store settings from the 2.4 kernel and worked, both front and rear channels. Have to get some speakers to see if center and subwoofer work!
One caveat--I compiled the alsa driver without the sequencer turned on for the 2.4 kernel; it gave an error with the switch turned on. Decent sound and no horrifying soundblaster issues!
