Description: Compiling my own kernel, I enabled ALSA's C-Media 8738/8338 driver (in a stock Linux 2.6.5). I haven't tried all the features, but output on line out works fine. There's also an OSS driver for CMI.

Turtle Beach links to a CMI (C-Media) OSS driver on their site, for use with Riviera; while that helped me figure out which driver to use, the driver included with the kernel worked fine.
/sbin/lspci output: 00:0f.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)

compiled the kernel with sound and ALSA; it found the old alsactl store settings from the 2.4 kernel and worked, both front and rear channels. Have to get some speakers to see if center and subwoofer work!
One caveat--I compiled the alsa driver without the sequencer turned on for the 2.4 kernel; it gave an error with the switch turned on. Decent sound and no horrifying soundblaster issues!
