Linux Mint on an old machine

I was given an old machine by a friend and I took it to work, where we have very few machines for people to use. It's a drop-in centre with very little money.

I put Windows on it to start with (XP Home) because that's what all our service users are used to. Every day a nag popped up telling us that we had nn days until the system expired and we'd have to register it.

I don't blame Microsoft for doing this. I can understand that they want people to pay for using their...

Installing Slackware 12.2 On An Old Dell Laptop - Part VII

I guess this is an end to this blog.

In the end I gave up on Slackware 12.2 and downloaded and installed Slackware 13. It works and has got the network.

I really don't know what was happening with 12.2 and I'm disappointed to have had to give up, but I have a lot of studying to do and can't spare the time to work at making the laptop work.

What I miss is learning how that interface stuff works at a fundamental level because I would like to understand...

Installing Slackware 12.2 On An Old Dell Laptop - Part V

It's been some time since I did any work on that old laptop. I've been away on holiday and then very busy.
So this evening I tried to get my head back into configuring eth0.
I've come up with a couple of ideas and tried them to no avail. Here goes -

I read here about pcmcia configuration:

and after some more reading around created /etc/modprobe.d/xircom.conf as follows:

A friend found a suitable power supply. So the laptop is up and running again.
I haven't done any more than hunt around on the 'net, in forums and news groups, and read Slackbook and more from Absolute BSD. All very useful stuff but I haven't found an answer that satisfies my need to understand what's going on.
I could simply ask on the forums what files I need to edit and how, but that wouldn't be entirely satisfactory unless it came with an explanation of what's going on.

I meant this evening to continue exploring the installation of Slackware onto my old Dell laptop. The battery stopped working many years ago and I've been running it off the mains. This evening I plugged in the power-supply and switched on at the socket and nothing happened.

I've put a meter across the mains outlet and it's working and the plug's fuse is okay and power gets as far as the connection into the power supply, but there's no little green light coming on.
