I don't even know what to type out for this blog...I mean, I know what I want to say...I just don't know **how** to go about wording it. See, I've been under the impression that Microsoft and vendors who utilize Microsoft products write easy to use operating systems and software suites. Today I noticed something strikingly similar to "Linux user-unfriendliness".

Now, I personally don't care what the user-friendly camp says. The only argument that makes ANY sense is that...

Thoughts on problem solving for new Linux users

One of the hardest issues to grasp for many Linux newbies is not a Linux issue, rather it's their problem-solving approach. With the closed-source Windows business model, you really only have one problem-solving option available: tech support. While members at sites such as LQ do their very best to provide something like tech support, there really is a lot more that newbies can do to speed up both their understanding of Linux and finding a solution to whatever problem they're looking at right...

Getting serious with PostgreSQL

Posted 01-29-2009 at 11:45 PM by rocket357

Ok, so the company I work for has set a hard date for the release/launch of our new flagship product...June 1st.

This is interesting for a number of reasons. First, the 5.0 project has been in "under heavy development" status for a seriously long time now (late 2007 I joined the 5.0 team, which at that time was roughly 20% done. I later moved from that team to the reporting division, spent a year there and then moved to my current role as DBA). I figured the 5.0 project...

In an earlier post, I told a story about finding out my wife was pregnant with our second child and converting my home office into a nursery. Here it is months later, and today we found out we're going to have a little boy.

Now, my wife and I are completely against "gender roles" as deemed appropriate by society. What's wrong with a man knowing how to cook, or a woman that knows how to handle a rifle? Nothing, IMHO, and enforcing such artificial constraints is not only...

The Mythical Desktop Percentage Point

Posted 01-19-2009 at 03:37 PM by rocket357

My apologies to Fred Brooks for creating this blog entry title in the likeness of his work "The Mythical Man-Month". Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery =)

It appears to me there is a growing concern among newer users in the Linux community over "desktop penetration rates" and "adoption rates". "If we don't get past 5% desktop usage, Linux will never go anywhere!" they say.

Now, I've only heard one argument for increasing...
