Microsoft Windows 7. My love of IT is back

I remember when Windows Vista was released. There was so much hope and promise. The cool thing then was the whole see through interface. You know the one you had to pay extra for and buy a new graphics card just to support. The cost in time, energy and money was substantial but I, like so many others, shelled out the fare and jumped on board the Vista train. And oh did that ever suck.
I remember talking with different friends in the business about rolling out vista then about rolling back to XP two month later. Vista was awful. Even to this day I can hardly endure using the os.
But now there's windows 7. All the promise of vista without the burden of vista. And I generally believe it's living up to its muted hype. I wonder today what the IT landscape would look like if Microsoft had not botched the vista os. Would apple be on such a roll? Would Linux be the strong competitor it is today without Microsoft turning off millions to their client os?
And now I wonder how different things will be in 5 more years when windows 7 has been given the opportunity to right some of vistas wrongs.
We shall see.

We shall see indeed. Vista converted me to Linux. I have now looked at Windows 7 and I like what I see. I have a RC1 copy and the the new computer I bought comes with a free upgrade to 7, so I've ordered it. Will I migrate back from Linux? I doubt it. I use windows now only when I have to. I have several working installations of XP, but they rarely get booted. I'll keep 7 for those times when I "must" have Windows, most of which are work related. I have my RC1 running in Vbox and will probably try installing the upgrade there as well. While 7 is a giant improvement (IMHO) over Vista, it holds no real attraction over Kubuntu. If more of us stay with and promote 'Nix in its various flavors, maybe the days of Having to have Windows" will someday (I hope) disappear.Posted 11-05-2009 at 08:12 AM by gerryggg

I think MS is going to have issues with all their different versions. I can hardly figure out which version I'm supposed to be upgrading to. Very frustrating.

Like it or loathe it M$ is always going to be there, and I for one am glad because even if Linux became stagnant we could look at the competitors and say "ooh shiny shiny" and sooner or later we would be back to innovating.
Personally I was using Linux before I sat my GCSE's so like it or LAMP it (so sad i think thats funny) it's here to stay. I was fed up when XP first came out and would not use it until SP2 (you know when m$ stopped supporting 2000), I now use vista on this laptop I'm on now (it was pre-installed and since the Service Pack it's not all that bad) and I'm sure in 3 or 4 years time I will move onto windows 7.
I'm not but I suspect your are a new software evangelist, not happy with what you have but curious to what you could have and willing to risk a stable system working well for an upgrade with shiny whistles and bells on.
Vista, 7 and "dilithium naquita infused photon accelerator"(anticipation of new windows crappy futuristic name) will all come out, dissapoint someone in some way, who will flame on at you for your forward thinking and willingness to risk. It will push people towards an alternative and some people will like what they find and some will go back to M$ because it's familiar and thats fine, as long as your happy doing what you do thats all that matters
keep chasing your dream of the perfect windows, I hope you find it. I also hope they don't discontinue support for it and make you buy a new one (like they did to me with 2000 *sighs) but even if they do I'm sure you'll find a new toy to excite you just as muchPosted 11-14-2009 at 02:21 PM by lewc
